Volunteers at SENA

SENA, Regional Cauca is glad to announce the arrival of our volunteers!

A group of 8 volunteers were received this past Monday at our Centre for Commerce and Services. A special welcome ceremony took place at the Auditorium "Gustavo Wilches Chaux" and was followed-up with a delicious meal prepared by our Hospitality Management team, led by instructor Sandra Fajardo and Cecilia Pajoy. During the ceremony, some of our apprentices introduced themselves in English and some of them even sang. Volunteers were later asked to come up with a skit which allowed them to interact in English with our students. We soon found out that our “Nativos” had also a talent for acting. Good stuff.

By learning English from native speakers from different countries and cultures we also ensure our students become familiarized with different accents and forms of English. That’s definitely a plus.

I’m guessing you are probably curious about their names and nationalities, so here’s a list of all our volunteers: Geoffrey Schoninger (USA), Jack Bellanger  (USA), Celina Barua (USA), Maria Potomova (Slovakia), Danielle Bergman (USA), Matthew Nilsson (USA), William Brooks (England), Viresh Kavikar (India) and Lesley Sideck (USA) . As you can see, we have a very diverse group

which is definitely a plus when the goal is to empower apprentices with tools that will allow them to be competitive in such a globalized market. At the same time, our volunteachers will also acquire a wealth of experience in relations to the South American culture, its practices and customs. In the US we call it a “win-win situation”.

The group of volunteers was split into three smaller groups. Group one will be teaching at Centre for Commerce and Services, the second with Centre for Technology and Industrial Production and the third one with Centre for Agriculture. Their focus will be to support our training programs and strengthen our students’ communicative skills.

As you can tell, we are really excited about this unique opportunity our students are being offered with.  All of us here at Sena Regional Cauca are looking forward for a great academic year!

Germany experience!

When I went to Germany, I learned about the culture, the people, the food, the education and the language.

The first days there were very difficult for me because of the cultural differences and language barriers. Communication was a little difficult with my host family.

During this time, I discovered so much about myself. Even though, I had a rough time because I missed my mom, my family and friends, Colombian food and my country. .

My experience changed my life because I had to make my own decisions, had to rely on myself and it definitely made me much more self aware. I believe that I did a good job.

When you can speak the language, in this case German, every day you are learning something new. I decided to go abroad because

I really just wanted to learn a new language and culture at the same time. There is always more to learn and the world is such a big place. The best way for me to learn was to go and experience it!

Now I have a family in Germany and many friends around the world.

Through my student exchange program, I understood that Colombia and Germany are two distinct cultures.  Neither is better nor worse just different. Now I am more tolerant and independent.
